Inclusion Criteria:



- male veterans

- 65 to 90 years of age

- independent

- sedentary

- vitamin D insufficiency

Exclusion Criteria:

- hypercalcemia

- renal failure

- living in a nursing home

change in lower extremity physical performance from baseline to 9 months
