When cancer affects a family, support is often there for the adults, but not always for the children. Camp Kesem ("kesem" meaning "magic" in Hebrew) is a college student-run summer camp for kids 6-13 who have/had a parent with cancer. By enjoying a week of fun and meeting kids in their same situation, these young children can find the support and attention they need, that might be difficult for their parent(s) to provide at home during this time. What is also so magical about these camps is that each of the college student volunteers raises the necessary funds each year, with an annual budget of almost $12,000!
Karma Krew is a non-profit organization that mobilizes local yoga communities to take positive action and practice yoga within the very cities in which they live through service. The theme of this Karma Krew fundraiser is “Giving Back to the Caregivers” and we want to honor and acknowledge the Camp Kesem volunteers who make the magic happen at two "local" camps, the University of Florida & the University of Miami. While these students may never have stepped onto a yoga mat, each of them is a practicing karma yogi – they are not working for fame or fortune, but selflessly hoping to improve the life of a child, one smile at a time.
Financial gifts will be collected during the first two weeks of April. Please donate at either The Yoga Shala (Winter Park) or Red Sun Yoga (Winter Springs). You may also donate on the Camp Kesem website but please remember to select either Univ of Florida or Univ of Miami when completing the online form!
Also, to come together in community, we will be gathering at The Yoga Shala (927 N. Pennsylvania Ave, Winter Park) on Saturday, April 17th for a FREE yoga practice. You may sign up for this here: www.karmakrew.com/orlando.asp. Please join us in honoring these amazing college students for their hard work!
